LOVE
“LOVE” is the second original I’ve released and is thus far our most streamed single.
When you fall in love, it pours down for a while, then it’s just a sprinkle here and there… and then often it stops raining all together and you’re waiting for someone to return a text message. The origins of this song was more of a traditional “love” song, so to speak, but eventually I realized LOVE is about the BIG LOVE, the one consciousness field where love doesn’t rain… it REIGNS.
“Love Love Love Love Love Reigns Down”
This realization was directly influenced by my experience with Transcendental Meditation, and led to verses that are almost word for word what a meditation teacher would say when leading a meditation.
“Close your eyes, and just breath, find your mantra and repeat, mind goes quiet, mind goes quiet”
This song features John Alexander on keyboards and the other amazing voice you hear is John Paquin.
SUNRISE
“SUNRISE” is the first single and it’s been a thrill to watch it push past 25k streams on Spotify. SUNRISE explores the inner-voice we all posses that shows up in our darkest hour to encourage us, offer a healthy perspective when we are underwater in the nonsense of life… or simply lost in our own drama.
“Surrender, take the breath, let it all go... The Sun Will Rise Again”
We used multiple layers of guitars, including one that was Nashville-tuned giving it a 12-string guitar sound in certain places. Guitarist Dwaine Bell added some amazing progressions that keep the song moving along while never getting in the way.
Singer John Paquin starts in the first verse as a background vocal that builds the first verse, adds a dynamic layer to the chorus, then sings different lyrics all together in the second verse. John and I were in an alternative rock band years ago, he was the lead singer while I sang from behind a drum set. Basically I handled the Psychedelic Furs covers and he sang everything else:-) In our originals, the contrast of our vocal styles gave us a unique sound that I wanted to explore again.
MOON
I WIll follow
every breath you take
When I started this project, I was deeply influenced by Rick Ruben + Johnny Cash’s American recordings. The stripped down version of NIN’s “HURT” still sends chills down my spine when I hear it. It was from this mindset I approached a few covers, and “Every Breath You Take” was the first.
Years ago I remember Sting talking about how dark the song really was, and he thought it was funny people were playing it at their wedding etc.
“The song is very sinister, and ugly, and people have actually misinterpreted it as being a gentle little love song, when it’s quite the opposite” - STING
Although he’s become more ambiguous when explaining the songs meaning over the decades… I wanted to embrace these darker undertones and create a stand-alone, unique version of this iconic hit.
I’ll let you know what Sting and boys think when they get back to me:-)
